Post Traumatic Stress Disorder - Joe Gardener Article author

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is also called PTSD. It is a disorder that is caused from a life- threatening trauma or act of bodily harm. The stressor may have involved the actual death of another person as in cases of war. Or, the traumatic event may have been life threatening as in the case of rape, sexual assault or natural disasters such as a hurricane.

Symptoms of PTSD include:

Nightmares

Flashbacks

Inability to Concentrate

Hypervigilance

Anxiety

Depression

Managing PTSD takes time and work but it can be done.

Develop a support network.

Many people who have PTSD will feel isolated and alone. Make an effort to be around supportive family members and friends. Surrounding yourself with positive family and friends can make a lot of difference.

Get professional help.

Some people benefit greatly from counseling and medications. This can help you manage the symptoms of PTSD and help you live your life more fully. If you need help, get it.

Eat a balanced diet

Most nutritionists and physicians recommend eating a diet that is low in fat and cholesterol and is free of excess sugar or carbohydrates. It is also often recommended that the diet include fresh fruit and vegetables. For best health, try to get at least nine servings of fruits and vegetables per day and reduce carbohydrates as well as refined sugar.

Exercise regularly.

Exercise has been shown to lower stress and burn calories. Aim for at least 45 minutes of physical activity at least 3 days a week. A brisk walk around the neighborhood can be all it takes to help you feel better. The exercise doesn't have to be strenuous.

Get enough sleep.

Having problems sleeping is common among PTSD sufferers. Talk with your doctor. Most adults need 6-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep to function well. Any less than that makes affects concentration. Try to get adequate rest. Talk with your doctor if you need help.

Be informed

Research PTSD to learn all you can. Your doctor may be able to give you printed information or brochures. Education can help you feel better about PTSD symptoms and can help you stay informed on the cutting edge research that is being done by the Veteran's Administration and others.

PTSD is manageable. If you have it you don't have to be alone. There is help and support from doctors, counselors and friends. Don't be afraid to reach out. You deserve any support that you need to heal.
